The Portuguese, who spent six years at Manchester United, beat Arsenal legend Thierry Henry and his former teammate Ryan Giggs in an online survey conducted by Usurv, as reported by English media.
One thousand members of the public were asked to choose between 10 players to vote for the best player in the English top flight’s 23-year history.
The other seven pre-selected players on the short-list were: Eric Cantona, Gianfranco Zola, Dennis Bergkamp, Steven Gerrard, Alan Shearer and Patrick Viera.
The Portuguese received almost a quarter of all votes (24 percent) and finished six percent ahead of Henry (18 percent).
Giggs received 13 percent of the votes, while Eric Cantona and Alan Shearer both collected 12 percent.
Steven Gerrard followed in sixth place with 10 percent, while Bergkamp, Zola, Keane and Viera only received 11 percent of the votes between them.
Marginally, over a quarter of the surveyed people selected the 11th option, specified as “other/don’t know”.
Ronaldo joined Manchester United as a 18-year-old in 2003 and scored 118 goals in 292 appearances during his time in England.
